Amazon SES: Exiting the Sandbox Mode

Amazon Simple Email Service (SES) is a reliable and scalable email sending service often used for mailings in the B2B segment. However, when you first use SES, your account is in the so-called "sandbox mode." This mode imposes significant restrictions on sending emails, making it unsuitable for full-fledged marketing campaigns or active lead generation. In this article, we will tell you how to exit the sandbox mode and remove the restrictions.

What is Amazon SES Sandbox Mode?

Sandbox mode is a protective measure designed to prevent abuse and protect the reputation of the service. While in the sandbox, your account has the following limitations:

  • Sending only to verified addresses: You can only send emails to email addresses that you have previously verified in Amazon SES. This means that you cannot send emails to potential customers or leads unless they have been added and confirmed in your SES account.
  • Limit on the number of emails sent: The maximum number of emails you can send within 24 hours is limited to 200.
  • Sending rate limit: The number of emails you can send per second (send rate) is also limited.

These restrictions make sandbox mode unsuitable for most tasks related to B2B sales, lead generation, or recruiting. For full use of Amazon SES, you must request to exit the sandbox and obtain production access.

How to Request Production Access in Amazon SES

To exit the sandbox mode, you need to submit a request for production access through the AWS Management Console. The process involves filling out a special form and providing detailed information about how you plan to use Amazon SES.

  1. Log in to the AWS Management Console: Go to the AWS website and log in to your account.
  2. Find Amazon SES: In the search bar, enter "SES" and select "Simple Email Service".
  3. Go to the "Email Sending" section: In the left menu, select "Email Sending".
  4. Click "Request Production Access": You will see a button or link called "Request Production Access". Click on it.
  5. Fill out the request form: A form will open that you need to fill out. This form is a key element of the process, so pay special attention to it.

What to Include in the Justification for Production Access Request

The most important part of the process is justifying your request. Amazon wants to make sure that you will use SES responsibly and will not engage in spamming. Your justification should be clear, detailed, and convincing. Here are a few key points to include:

  • Detailed description of your use-case: Describe exactly how you plan to use Amazon SES. For example:
    • "We plan to use SES to send cold email campaigns as part of a lead generation strategy for the B2B segment."
    • "We use SES to automatically send transactional emails (e.g., registration confirmation, password reset) to users of our platform."
    • "We plan to send personalized email newsletters to our customers with information about product updates, promotions, and company news."
    • "We use SES to send email notifications to recruiters about new candidates that match their requirements."
  • Explanation of the email address collection process: Describe how you obtain the email addresses of your recipients. It is important to emphasize that you use only legal and ethical methods of data collection. For example:
    • "We collect email addresses through subscription forms on our website, offering useful content in exchange for a subscription."
    • "We use data from LinkedIn Sales Navigator to find potential customers and send them personalized emails."
    • "We purchase email address databases from trusted providers who guarantee compliance with GDPR and other regulatory requirements." (Note: this option can be risky and requires special care and verification of the provider.)
  • Description of the unsubscribe process: Explain how you handle unsubscribe requests. It is important to show that you respect the right of recipients to opt out of receiving your emails. For example:
    • "Each of our emails has an unsubscribe link that allows the recipient to instantly opt out of receiving further mailings."
    • "We automatically remove email addresses that have unsubscribed from the mailing list from our database."
    • "We use spam protection mechanisms to minimize the risk of our emails ending up in spam folders."
  • Expected volume of emails sent: Indicate how many emails you plan to send per day, week, or month. This will help Amazon assess your needs and set appropriate limits.
    • "We plan to send about 500-1000 emails per day initially, gradually increasing the volume to 5000-10000 emails per day."
  • Examples of email templates: Provide examples of email templates that you plan to use. This will allow Amazon to assess the quality of your content and make sure that you are not sending spam. Use AI content rotation for personalization.
  • Information about your company: Briefly tell us about your company and what you do. This will help Amazon better understand your business and your needs.

Example justification:

"We are [Company Name], engaged in [Description of activity]. We plan to use Amazon SES to send cold email campaigns as part of a lead generation strategy for the B2B segment. We collect email addresses of potential customers through LinkedIn Sales Navigator and send them personalized emails offering our services. Each of our emails has an unsubscribe link that allows the recipient to instantly opt out of receiving further mailings. We plan to send about 500-1000 emails per day initially, gradually increasing the volume to 5000-10000 emails per day. Examples of our email templates are attached."

Remember that the more detailed and convincing your justification, the higher the likelihood that your request will be approved.

Request Review Time

After submitting a request for production access, Amazon SES will review it within 24-48 hours. In some cases, the review may take longer if Amazon requires additional information. During this time, monitor your email, as Amazon may contact you to clarify details.

After your request is approved, the sandbox mode restrictions will be lifted, and you will be able to fully use Amazon SES for your email mailings. Do not forget to configure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC to improve the deliverability of your emails.

Use domain warmup to improve your domain reputation and avoid being marked as spam.
